Officially opened in December of 1976, Llyn Brenig, at 920 acres, is one of the largest lakes (or llynnoedd) in Wales, consisting of over ten miles of heather-laden banks to fish from. Brenig is almost 1,235 feet up on the Denbigh Moors so can be a might bleak early season. Its waters are nearly 150 feet deep near the water tower.
Dry flies account for over 80% of the fish caught during any one season as the trout are forced to look upwards for terrestials due to the lack of food below the surface, Daddy Long Legs and Heather Flies being favourites.
The World Fly Fishing Championships and regular Home Fly-fishing Internationals have helped to establish an international reputation for the fishery, a place where anglers can enjoy fishing heather and spruce lined shores for hard fighting trout, some of them spawned in streams around the Lake. Llyn Brenig is one of the few remaining fisheries preserved exclusively for fly-fishing.
The record rainbow of 12lb 3oz was taken in 1997 and a brown trout of 8lb 14oz in 1989.
